
Stop Overpaying for Your Bakery Oven Heating Tubes
Let’s be honest: buying replacement heating lamps directly from the OEM is usually a rip-off. Especially with imported ovens, the price markup is wild. But when you start looking for a cheaper alternative, you can’t just grab the first tube that looks “close enough.” You’re balancing heat density and electrical load. Get it wrong, and you’re looking at a very expensive mistake.
Getting the Specs Right
You can’t eyeball this. If your original spec says 230V/1000W at 300mm, your new tube needs to hit those numbers on the dot. If the length is off by even a tiny bit, you’re in trouble. Too short? The tube rattles around. Too long? You’ll likely crack the quartz just trying to shove it into the brackets. And for the love of your equipment,double-check the voltage. I’ve seen people put a 110V tube into a 220V circuit. It doesn’t take long—it’ll burn out in seconds. On the flip side, if you go with a higher voltage tube on a lower line, you won’t get enough heat. You’ll end up with bread that’s basically raw in the middle.
The Deal with Quartz and Halogen
Most of the high-end lamps use quartz glass filled with halogen gas. This is what lets the filament run scorching hot without just evaporating away, which keeps the tube alive longer. You’ll also see “coated” versions. These aren’t just for looks. They shift the infrared spectrum so the heat actually gets into the crust instead of just searing the outside and leaving the inside doughy. One more thing: check your connectors. Whether you’re using R7s or those slide-in clips, they need to be snug. A loose connection causes arcing—that annoying sparking sound—which eats away at the metal and kills your tube way faster than it should.
The Power Trade-off
It’s tempting to go for high-wattage tubes because they heat up fast. Who doesn’t want a faster bake? But here’s the catch. More power puts a lot more stress on your wiring and contactors. If you decide to bump up the power density to speed up production, make sure your control board can actually handle the extra current. If you overload the circuit, you’re going to trip breakers or, worse, fry your relay. Better to play it safe than to spend your morning staring at a dead oven.
