If you’re running an older Sacmi SBF 24, you know the headache of inconsistent preform heating. One minute everything is fine, and the next, your cycle times are dragging or your wall thickness is all over the place. Usually, it’s not the machine’s fault. It’s just that your infrared lamps are tired. The good news? You don’t need a whole new oven. Swapping out those old bulbs for precision halogen tubes can bring your throughput right back to where it needs to be.
The Nerd Stuff (But Simplified)
To get PET preforms to that “sweet spot” where they’re ready to blow, you need the right mix of wattage and voltage. We make our replacement lamps to fit the original footprint exactly. No hacking, no drilling—just a straightforward swap. We use high-wattage shortwave lamps because they push energy into the plastic faster. It’s more efficient. **But a word of warning:**double-check your voltage rails before you plug anything in. If you put a 230V lamp into a 400V circuit, it’ll pop instantly. On the flip side, if the voltage is too low, you’ll get cold spots. That’s a recipe for blow-outs during expansion, and nobody wants to clean that up.
Why the Build Quality Actually Matters
We use high-purity quartz glass for the housing. Why? Because cheap glass warps when things get hot, and that ruins everything. We also use the halogen cycle to keep the filament clean, which means the lamps just last longer than your standard IR tubes. Then there are the connectors. In my experience, this is where most machines fail. We use reinforced R7s or Sk15 bases to make sure the electrical contact is tight. If the connection is loose, you get arcing. Those little sparks melt the socket and kill your brand-new lamp before it even gets a chance to work.
A Reality Check from the Shop Floor
Look, new lamps are great and they’ll definitely bump up your bottles-per-hour. But they aren’t a magic wand. More heat means your oven’s ventilation has to work harder. If your blowers are clogged with dust or your cooling fans are on their last legs, all that extra heat has nowhere to go. It’ll end up warping your reflectors. Do yourself a favor: check your airflow first. Once you know the air is moving, then ramp up the power.
