
Can a Simple Lamp Swap Actually Speed Up Your Preform Output?
If you’re running an older Husky or a mid-tier blower, you know the feeling. Your cycle times are dragging, and it starts to feel like the machine is just tired. But before you decide the gear is too old to save, take a look at your heating profile. A lot of the time, the bottleneck isn’t the machine itself—it’s the lamps. Swapping out worn-out infrared tubes for high-density ones can really change how heat hits the plastic. Just don’t expect it to be a magic wand. There’s a bit of a catch. Let’s talk about heat density. To get more preforms out the door every hour, you need the PET to hit that glass transition temperature fast. But you have to do it without scorching the surface. We build our replacement lamps to match the voltage and wattage of your original Husky oven, but we push the IR radiation flux higher. Basically, the preform drinks in the heat faster. One heads-up: if you go with a higher-wattage drop-in, check your power supply. Your transformers and wiring have to be able to handle that extra current draw. If they can’t, you’re just going to burn out your contacts. The nitty-gritty on quartz and coatings. We use heavy-wall quartz glass because it doesn’t bow when things get screaming hot. We also lean on short-wave infrared technology. Why? Because short-wave radiation actually sinks into the PET wall better than long-wave does. We also use specific coatings to tune the emission. This helps kill those annoying “hot spots” on the preform. And since we use standard R7s or Sk15 connectors, they just slide right in. No need to spend your weekend rewiring the oven. The reality check. Here’s the thing: when you crank up the lamps, you’re putting a lot more heat inside that oven. If your cooling blowers are clogged with dust or just too small for the job, the ambient temperature inside is going to spike. That’s a recipe for lamp failure or preforms that come out inconsistent. I always suggest auditing your airflow before you make the swap. If your cooling can’t keep up, the machine will look great for the first hour. But by hour eight? You’ll be dealing with a mess.
