
Can swapping your lamps actually speed up your blow molding?
I’ve talked to a lot of people running mid-tier Chumpower machines who are frustrated with their preheating. You know the drill: you start seeing cold spots or those annoying “pearls” in your PET preforms, and your first instinct is to just slow the whole machine down. It feels like the only way to keep the quality up. But before you go shopping for a brand new blower, take a look at your infrared (IR) heating elements. You might just need better lamps. The secret is in the heat density. When you swap out standard lamps for high-output IR tubes, you’re basically changing how much energy actually hits the plastic. By bumping up the wattage or tweaking the voltage, you shove more heat into the preform in a much shorter window of time. The best part? You can actually speed up the machine without worrying about your wall thickness getting wonky. We made these as drop-in replacements, so they fit the original footprint and use the same connectors. No need to rip out your wiring or spend a weekend rewiring the oven. What’s actually inside the tube? We use heavy-wall quartz glass because it doesn’t crack when the temperature swings wildly. Then, we fill them with halogen gas. This keeps the filament hotter, which pushes the heat deeper into the PET, faster. One thing to watch out for: the connectors (usually R7s or Sk15) are where these machines usually fail. They just can’t handle the stress. That’s why we use reinforced contacts to stop that nasty arcing. Just a heads-up—if you’re on a 230V or 400V system, double-check that your contactors can handle the extra current these high-wattage tubes pull. The catch (because there’s always one) More heat isn’t some magic button. If you put in higher-wattage lamps, your oven is going to get hotter. This is where your cooling fans come in. If they’re clogged with dust or barely spinning, you’re going to overheat the neck of the preform and end up with deformed bottles. Keep your vents clean. Balance that extra heat with good airflow, and you’ll hit that sweet spot where everything just works.
