
Can upgrading your infrared lamps actually push out more bottles?
I’ve seen it a hundred times. An operator is running an older Sidel SBO line and they’re desperate to squeeze out a few more bottles per hour. Their first instinct? Just crank up the heat. But here’s the problem. If your lamps are old and dim, or if they were never meant for the type of preform you’re running, you’re going to hit a wall. The plastic just won’t soften evenly. A lot of people try to fix this with mid-tier lamps that claim to be “just like the original,” but they usually fall short. It’s not about “more heat.” Think of it more as heat density. We use short-wave infrared halogen lamps for SBO machines because they’re smart. Instead of wasting energy heating up the air in the oven, they shoot that energy straight into the PET. When you swap those tired, faded tubes for fresh, high-wattage ones, the preform hits its softening point much faster. That means less “dwell time” and more bottles moving through the line. Getting the fit right You can’t just throw any bulb in there. A replacement has to fit the SBO housing perfectly, or you’re asking for trouble. The real trick is the balance between voltage and wattage. If you put a high-wattage tube on a low-voltage circuit, it’s going to be sluggish. But if you push too much current through a tube that can’t handle it? You’ll burn out the filament in a couple of weeks. Total waste of money. We stick with R7s or Sk15 connectors. Why? Because quartz glass expands when it gets hot, and these connectors stay put without losing the electrical connection. Plus, the coating on the quartz reflects the heat forward. You want that energy hitting the plastic, not baking your oven walls. The catch Now, there is a trade-off. Faster heating is great, but it puts a lot more stress on your cooling system. If you’re boosting your production with higher-density lamps, go check your oven exhaust fans. If your cooling can’t keep up with the extra ambient heat, you’ll start seeing “pearling” or burnt spots on your PET. It’s a frustrating cycle. You’ll end up trading your new speed for a pile of scrap. Keep that airflow dialed in, and you’re golden.
