
Why Your Bathroom Heater Won’t Just Blow Up
Putting a heating lamp in a shower is a bit of a gamble. You’ve got steam everywhere and water splashing from every angle. If you just throw a standard infrared lamp in there, it’s going to short out or shatter. Not a great way to start your morning. To stop that from happening, we lean on two main things: an IP55-rated shell and some pretty tough quartz glass. Keeping the water out You’ll see “IP55” on the box. In plain English, that just means the thing is built to handle dust and low-pressure water jets hitting it from any direction. We make this happen with tight seals on the electrical junctions and gaskets that stop steam from creeping into the wiring. Because if moisture hits those terminals? You get arcing. And nobody wants that in a shower. The shell keeps the guts dry while letting the heat push outward to keep you warm. The “explosion-proof” part Now, when we say the quartz tubes are “explosion-proof,” it doesn’t mean the lamp is a bomb. It’s actually about thermal shock. Think about it: you’ve got a tube that’s glowing red-hot, and suddenly a splash of cold water hits it. Regular glass can’t handle that kind of mood swing—it just cracks. We use high-purity fused silica instead. It has a very low expansion rate, meaning it can take a beating from those temperature swings without snapping. Plus, we coat the tubes to tune the infrared waves. The goal is to make sure the heat actually hits your skin, rather than just warming up the air around you. A few things to watch for These heaters are great because the heat is instant. But there’s a trade-off. That IP55 seal that keeps water out also traps some heat inside. When you’re mounting it, make sure you aren’t blocking the vents. If you do, the internal wiring will basically bake itself over time. Also, don’t go overboard with the wattage in a tiny stall. If the air gets too hot too fast, the thermal cutoff will just kill the power. One last tip: always wire it to a GFCI breaker. It’s the best way to make sure everything shuts down safely if a seal ever gives way.
